The Great Beauty tour at a glance
We will be visiting some of the highlights that contributed to the success of this great Oscar-winning Italian movie.
The guided tour begins in Campo de Fiori, one of the most characteristic and colorful squares of the city. The name means “field of flowers” and was first named this way in the Middle Ages when the area was actually a meadow. Today the market is a lively place, especially when the daily vegetable market is held here. We will introduce our tour, while taking a look at the gaudy stands, maybe grabbing a fresh fruit salad!
From there we will continue our walk through this very charming medieval urban tissue: a maze of lines, historical bridges, amazing sights and curious stories that will catch your attention.
In Trastevere, on the other side of the river, we will be climbing the Gianicolo hill (yes, Rome is on seven hills!), one of the most fascinating places in Rome. It will be worth the effort: we will be discovering treasures of the Renaissance and Baroque period, and a great view from one of the most scenographic points of the city.
The Big Fountain, this is how locals call the romantic Fontana dell’Acqua Paola, (where one of the first scenes of the movie takes place) will give you the best stage for a memorable picture!
Rome is the result of 3000 years of ad hoc urban development: from the Gianicolo Hill, you can admire a unique cityscape. In Piazza Garibaldi, our last highlight, we will set our watches because right at Noon a Cannon will bang! Do not be alarmed! It is a tradition since 1847, when Pope Pius IX imposed a standard on the church bells because each one of them used to sound at random, creating uncertainty and confusion!
Here is the itinerary of the tour:
Campo de’ Fiori, Ponte Sisto with view on the Tiber Island, Piazza Trilussa, Church of San Pietro in Montorio (outside), Tempietto del Bramante, Fontana dell’Acqua Paola (the Big Fountain), Gianicolo Hill.
